Women and the City
What is it like to be a woman walking alone in London?
Women and the City is a photographic project that explores women’s relationship with London and its streets. Through a combination of photographs and personal testimonies, the work reflects my own connection to the city alongside the voices of women who have shared how it feels to move through London on their own. Together, these perspectives reveal the emotional landscape of navigating the city as a woman — from moments of freedom and belonging to experiences of vulnerability and caution.
Women often engage with urban spaces differently than men, developing coping mechanisms and altering routes to maintain a sense of safety. Invisible boundaries across the city can include some and exclude others, shaping how we move through the city. Women and the City highlights the everyday negotiations many women face and the strategies we use to protect ourselves. It also asks us to imagine: what would a city designed with women’s safety and freedom at its centre look like?
