New Citizens
What is home? And what does one do when it is under the threat of unforeseeable circumstances? What does it mean to be British? Does obtaining a citizenship certificate validate a sense of belonging? These are some of the questions New Citizens explores during a moment of great change in Britain, as it left the European Union and looked for its new national identity.
New Citizens portrays Martin from Czech Republic, Isabela from Romania, Humberto from Colombia and Adam from Greece. They have all chosen the UK to be the place they call ‘home’, to establish their lives, families and develop their careers. However, Brexit became a threat to these lives as it put in question their right to remain in the UK.
The body of work focuses on the link between citizenship and identity by reflecting on the relationship one creates with the place chosen as 'home'.
